CHARACTERISTICS AND APPLICATION OF
EXPLOSION·PROOF FANS
Explosion-proof fans are intended for use in explosion hazard areas,
where explosive atmosphere may be present - mixtures of air with gasses, vapours, mists and hazardous dusts.
The fans offered by NYBORG - MAWENT may be produced in an explosion-proof version, maintaining at the same
time all the parameters of their standard versions. Their construction was modified to ensure safety in case of exces,
sive temperature, arcs and electric sparks, both, inside of the fan's casing and on exterior parts during normal operation.
Non-sparking materials and electric motors in explosion-proof versions as well, were applied.
1) Directives/Ordinances
In case of potentially explosive areas and equipment meant for operation in these zones, two basic ATEX Directives are to be
observed:
- 94/9/WE - the Ordinance of the Minister of Economy dated 22 December 2005 on key requirements for protective equipment and systems intended for use in potentially explosive areas - it applies to producers of explosion-proof equipment
related to safety.
- 1999/92/WE - the Ordinance of Minister of Labour and Social Policy (MGPiPS) dated 29 May 2003 on minimal requirements related to work safety and hygiene of personnel employed at positions where potentially explosive atmosphere
may be present - it applies to producers of explosion-proof equipment related to the classification of potentially explosive
area.
2) Area Classification
The potentially explosive area (zone) (explosive atmosphere) is a mixture of flammable substances in a form of gasses,
vapours, mists (G marking) or dusts (D marking) with air in atmospheric conditions, temperature range of -20++60°C and
pressure range 0.8+1.1 bar.
Zone 0 - area, where potentially explosive area consisting of the mixture of flammable substances in a form of gas, vapour
or mists (G) with air maintains permanently, for extended periods of time or occurs frequently.
Zone 1 - area, where it is highly probable that potentially explosive area consisting of the mixture of flammable substance
in a form of gas, vapour or mists (G) with air will occur occasionally during regular operations.
Zone 2 - area, where it is hardly probable that potentially explosive area consisting of the mixture of flammable substance
in a form of gas, vapour or mists (G) with air will occur during regular operations. When it occurs, it will last for a short period
of time.
3) Equipment Classification
Explosion-proof centrifugal fans produced by NYBORG MAWENT SA are classified as explosion-proof equipment.
