Ever increasing levels of reliability and safety demand more complex analysis techniques and engineering simulations to verify the overall suitability and optimise the design of structural components. We consider the use of 2-D and 3-D Finite Element (FE) analysis as an integral component of the overall design process. We are conscious of the ever increasing need for complex finite element analysis and our main choice of software for this purpose is ANSYS. This is a state of the art multidisciplinary finite element programme allowing detailed engineering simulations of real world environments. It is particularly applicable for problems involving significant geometric or material non-linearities such as plasticity, non-linear material properties, temprature effects, dynamic response and contact problems.
